Exploring Kinship in Africa's Wild Forests

Walking Among Our Closest Relatives

Join primate specialist Jess McKelson and RAW Africa Eco-Tours for a remarkable journey into the forests of east Africa to encounter chimpanzees and mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

As we travel through this complex landscape, we will meet the conservationists, researchers and communities driven to protect this fragile ecosystem. We will explore the idea of kinship, the deep connections that link humans with great apes. On this journey we will take time to learn the art of truly seeing the forest and the wildlife that relies on it, and learn some of the scientific techniques researchers use to observe and record great ape behaviour in the wild.

The Journey

This extraordinary journey takes you across Uganda and Rwanda to experience some of the most important landscapes for great ape conservation.

Visit Ngamba Island to observe rescued chimpanzees, track wild chimps in Kalinzu Forest, and spend time in the field with the Jane Goodall Institute Uganda team learning how researchers study primate behaviour.

Trek into the misty mountains of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to encounter endangered mountain gorillas, then travel into Rwanda to meet the team from Gorilla Doctors, visit the Dian Fossey Centre, and explore the ancient rainforest of Nyungwe National Park.

Along the way we also experience some of Uganda’s remarkable wildlife landscapes, including Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Murchison Falls National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and the wetlands of Mbamba Swamp, home to the rare shoebill stork.

DAY 2 - Shoebill Storks & Entebbe Botanical Gardens

This morning we ease into the rhythms of Uganda’s wildlife with a boat excursion into the Mabamba Wetlands, one of the best places in Africa to search for the extraordinary shoebill stork. Gliding quietly through papyrus channels by canoe, we look for this rare and prehistoric-looking bird.

In the afternoon we visit the historic Entebbe Botanical Gardens, where towering trees offer a peaceful introduction to Uganda’s remarkable biodiversity.

There will also be time to visit a supermarket for snacks and an ATM to withdraw local currency before we begin travelling deeper into Uganda’s wild landscapes.

DAY 3 - Ngamba Island

Today we travel by boat across Lake Victoria to visit Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Established through an initiative of the Jane Goodall Institute and now managed by the Chimpanzee Trust, the sanctuary provides a safe home for rescued chimpanzees that can no longer survive in the wild.

Stepping onto the island offers a powerful introduction to the lives of chimpanzees and the challenges facing great apes across Africa. Watching the chimps interact within their forest habitat reveals complex social behaviours that will become a focus of our journey.

After returning to the mainland for lunch, the afternoon is spent introducing the basics of observing great ape behaviour — exploring how researchers record animal behaviour and the challenges of collecting meaningful data in the wild.

DAY 7 - In the Field with the Jane Goodall Institute, Hoima

Today we spend time with the Jane Goodall Institute Uganda team working in the forests around Hoima, where wild chimpanzee communities live within a landscape shared with surrounding villages and farmland.

Walking through these forest fragments reveals both the resilience and fragility of chimpanzee habitat. These forests provide vital food and shelter for chimpanzees, yet they are under constant pressure from deforestation as nearby communities rely on wood for fuel.

Together with the JGI team we explore how conservation solutions are being developed alongside local communities, including the production of fuel briquettes, an alternative energy source that can reduce the need for firewood and help protect the remaining forest that chimpanzees depend on.

This visit offers an important insight into the challenges of protecting wild chimpanzee populations and the partnerships working to secure their future.
