On arrival, we’ll meet you at Entebbe International Airport and transfer you to your accommodation at the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre/Entebbe Zoo, where there’s time to relax, meet your fellow travelers and get ready for your conservation safari.

We set out early for Mbamba Wetlands, crossing Lake Victoria in traditional boats, to seek out one of the worlds rarest birds - the Shoebill Stork.
Once back in Entebbe, we will visit a supermarket for essentials, then head to the Ugandan Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) - Entebbe Zoo. We will meet with some of the women working as animal keepers and take a behind the scenes tour, then spend time with the Chimpanzee team and learn the principles of great ape behavioural data collection and sampling methods - ethograms.

Ngamba Chimpanzee Island is a ground-breaking initiative of the Jane Goodall Institute and is now managed by the Chimpanzee Trust. After a short boat ride on Lake Victoria, you will step onto this remarkable Island Sanctuary to learn more about the work involved in rebuilding the lives of these great apes. Trial different sampling methods and test the data collection techniques you learnt while at Entebbe Zoo, then return to shore for lunch.
In the afternoon we will visit the oldest botanical gardens in Africa, Entebbe Botanical Gardens. Here we will meet with the lead veterinarian of the Jane Goodall Institute, Uganda, Dr Peter Apell and gain an undertanding

After breakfast we will travel south, journeying under the shadow of the stunning Rwenzori Mountains, to Queen Elizabeth National Park (QENP). This is the second largest park in Uganda and is renown for its diverse array of habitats: lakes, savannah grasslands, forests, and wetlands.
We will stay overnight at our tented camp overlooking the waterways and beautiful expanses of the park.

The Kalinzu Central Forest Reserve, which borders Queen Elizabeth National Park, is home to several families of Chimpanzees and is a community managed forest & tourism project.
This will be one of the highlights of your Ugandan journey. Once you witness these amazing primates you will understand what inspired Dr Jane Goodall to dedicate her entire life to fighting for their survival. This is an opportunity to record wild chimpanzee behaviour drawing on the expertise of your forest guides.
After our morning trek, we will head into the park for lunch and board our boat for a wildlife cruise along the Kazinga Channel. The 32 km channel runs between Lake Edward and Lake George, and is a haven for hippo, buffalo, elephants, crocodiles and a huge array of bird species. Finish the day with a game drive along the edge of the channel.

We will start our day with a dawn game drive on the buffalo plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park. After returning to the lodge for breakfast we will travel south to Kisoro. Surrounded by towering extinct volcanoes and crater lakes, Kisoro sits at the base of the Virunga massif, only a stones throw away from the borders to Rwanda and DR Congo. Tonight we will dine at Travelers Rest Guest House. This guest house was made famous by another eminent primatologist, Dian Fossey who based herself at Travelers Rest while undertaking her gorilla research in DR Congo.

The trek to see the Mountain Gorillas will surely be a trip highlight. To spend an unforgettable day with some of the last wild Mountain Gorillas on earth will live in your memory forever. Trekking times will vary depending on the location of your allocated gorilla family. We encourage our guests to hire a porter on the day. This will not only make your trek more enjoyable, but provides employment for local community members.

Canoe lake Mutanda OR Golden Monkey Trek
RAW Africa Eco-Tours has always been passionate about supporting community projects that reduce pressure on wildlife. Mabungo Village Community project provides sustainable income through tourism.
We will spend the morning visiting the village to experience traditional Ugandan life - music, dancing and food. In the afternnon we will spend a couple of hours relaxing in a traditional canoe on Lake Mutanda. Alternatively you may wish to continue your treking and wildlife experience searching for the rare golden monkey in Mgahinga National Park.

Today we will bid farewell to Uganda and cross the border to Rwanda, the land of a thousand hills. Volcanoes National Park was the primary research site for Dian Fossey. We will visit the newly constructed Dian Fossey Centre to gain an understanding of her research, passion and ultimate sacrifice.
In the afternoon you will have the opportunity to explore Kigali city or visit the Genocide Memorial. We will spend our final night celebrating our journey into the heart of Africa.

Brooke has a degree in Biology and Masters in International Community Development. She spent 17 years as a rhino keeper at Werribee Open Range Zoo in Australia, before moving to the Wildlife Conservation and Science team at Zoos Victoria. In this role Brooke was able to develop Zoos Victoria's international partnerships and programs in Kenya and DR Congo.
Brooke established RAW Africa Eco-Tours in 2012, based on a passionate belief that both communities and wildlife in Africa can benefit from sustainable tourism. Brooke believes that 'RAW' guests can make a difference by spending time with organisations working on the frontline of conservation. This is the heart and soul of RAW’s Conservation journeys, which directly support our conservation field partners, while giving our guests insight into the complexities of wildlife conservation in Africa.
